  • I use winquote.net for a quick reference. You should be aware that ANY online quote is just a quick guide though. It won't factor in any kinds of ratings and won't tell you what the renewal rates are either. The renewal rates are very important...ABC company might be $5 cheaper now, but when it renews it might be $25 more expensive than all the others.

After you look online, it's best to meet with a broker in person to compare the top companies. A broker can tell you which companies are good and which aren't, he can assess how much insurance you will need, and can go over the renewal rates and prepare you for any ratings that might be applied...a website won't do any of these things for you.

    Source(s):

  • Before you get quotes make sure you know exactly what type, amount and duration of cover you need. Then you can go online and compare as much of the market as possible. Some of the main price comparison sites compare mutliple providers but there are smaller broker sites too. Don't forget that some major insurers aren't included in price comparison sites though. Try some of these...

Who is liable for loss of food in a power cut..?

Ive had a power cut for apx 16 hrs, its safe to assume that my freezer has defrosted. Can I claim of the energy supplier or do I have to go through my house insurer...

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

Your food should not be bad after 16 hours. We had a major flood, out of the house for a week, came back and the stuff around the edges was starting to thaw out. The stuff in the middle was frozen solid. And that was after a week with no electricity

  • You are responsible so you claim through your house insurance. I live in a rural area with overhead power and phone lines which are prone to power loss from high winds, heavy snow and ice. I have a chest freezer and keep it stocked up with more loaves of bread than any family would need along with the other items. If we get a long power failure one of the things we do is to pile in newspaper to fill it up. Keeping it well stocked means its insulated against defrosting for a longer period.
I have had loss of power for over 24 hours - one New Year we lost power for 3 days but nothing in my freezer was lost.

My insurance Claim was denied because I had the wrong types of locks on the doors... What can I do?

Resolved Question

My insurance Claim was denied because I had the wrong types of locks on the doors... What can I do?

I rent a flat in London and I was burgled while away on Christmas holiday. The thief broke two doors getting in. My insurance company (HSBC, Underwritten by Aviva) says they won't cover my loses because I did not have a 5 lever mortice dead lock approved to BS3621 installed on the door. My landlord gave me two keys and I locked every door that I had a key for before I left. After looking through the small print in the policy I did see where there is an endorsement (special terms and conditions) that says I must have a certain type of lock. However, I don't remember being asked about this... HSBC claims they have a tape of the conversation where I said yes to the endorsement, but I'm no locksmith... I wouldn't know a 5 lever mortice deadlock from a Yale lock or any other type of door lock. Since my door has never had this type of lock, I essentially have never been covered. I've been paying my premiums for nothing. I'm going to go to the the Financial Ombudsman, but can I win this case? If so, how?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

This is a common tactic adopted amongst insurance companies. These people are SUPER-CAREFUL at all times to make sure that the methods they use to sell something is JUST legal and no more. It is simple psychology - put simply, they rely on your own arrogance in knowing what the operative is talking about, to sell products or services.

In this matter - get a hold of the taped conversation and listen to it. They may apply a charge for this, but it is usually surrendered gratis to a lawyer - particularly when there is a threat of legal action.

Knowledge of locks is irrelevant - this company can reasonably make a suggestion, which you then agree to - they can put the body of that agreement into the contract as a clause. If you subsequently neglect to act (ie: change your locks to those suggested) - you're right, they never covered you since they can (again) reasonably claim that you have/had the wrong locks at the time of the crime.

I'll bet that small-print will also have spelled out that if you change your own locks at any time, for ANY reason, they must be made aware of the changes.

If you still feel optimistic about action, take the taped conversation to a lawyer. The first hour is usually free - so be ready to state your case briefly and concisely. Your lawyer will tell you if you have a case or not and must state their charges per hour. Be sure to ask how long this will take.

The financial ombudsman will be able to evaluate your case, and may secure the return of monies paid by issuing an advisory note to HSBC.

  • This is fundamentally unfair. Even though you agreed, you are a renter and do not control what locks are on the door. Go to Citizens Advice Bureau - they are free, and on your side. They will lean on HSBC and /or Aviva to give you something. If that doesn't work, try Consumer's Association ("Which?"). I know they have sometimes been able to help people in this situation.
  • Hi, I am sorry to learn this news.. Is it mentioned in the HSBC rules book that you should have 5 lever lock, or did you sign that paper at the time of insuring the house. If not you can hire a good lawyer and then fight back legally, you will get your claims.

    Source(s):

  • Better you consult an lawyer expert in insurance. Hope he will find some loope hole in the insurance policy in yr favour. Generally speaking, most of us dont know the lock and handle details, particularly when is is rented.
  • I had the same problem when I took out my insurance, so I looked on the Internet and didn't have one, so I said no - what you should have done.
  • You need to see the citizens advice bureau on this one.

Having lost my mobile the other week and claiming a replacement on my vodafone insurance. My lost phone turned up. The sim was barred but the phone will work with another sim so if I reuse the old phone will vodafone know?

Any help appreciated.

the old phone has a unique ESN/MEID number & yes, they will know if you use it because of the unique ID

I would recommend contacting them & asking them what they want you to do.. return the new phone or return your old phone

Buy Insurance Policy Online?

Resolved Question

Buy Insurance Policy Online?

Folks, Is it possible to buy insurance policies (LIC term plan, child plan & pension plas) online ? Is it safe to buy online ?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

Yes, it is possible to buy insurance online, however I strongly recommend you don't! A website typically won't give you an objective opinion on whether a company is good or not. They also won't be able to give you feedback on your application if there are any substandard risks. (when you submit the application if you have medical conditions the website will submit the application anyways. If you go through a live person, they might say "Wait a minute, ABC is cheaper in the begining, but with this information we now have, there's a good chance you will get heavily rated with a 75% rating due to this illness with ABC company that we are applying for, but XYZ company won't rate you at all becuase they have a different underwritting process for this product, so in the end they will be cheaper than ABC company"

Go through a broker in person. Their services are typically free as well, and they can do all the functions of a website (shop around, compare multiple quotes, give you resources to educate you, etc), PLUS they can directly answer your questions and provide you with additional feedback throughout the process to help you along. A website might be good to give you a rough idea of which way to go or to get some basic knowledge, but with a major financial decision that can mean the difference of leaving nothing for your family, or litterally hundreds of thousands of dollars...I'd want to make sure I was dealing with someone that will fully give me the info I need, rather than just collect up an application and push out another policy every 5 minutes.

I need help with rbs home and contents insurance and making a complaint.?

Resolved Question

I need help with rbs home and contents insurance and making a complaint.?

My flat was flooded by upstairs because of a frozen pipe in their attic at 11am saturday morning. I phoned my insurance company and was told i needed to make a claim through their insurance not my own. The landlord from upstairs phoned me at 2pm and said her insurance office closed at 1pm(not sure i beleive that) and that she would phone me first thing monday morning, so i gave her my mobile number aswell as the house number. I had 1 missed call on my landline with no message left and a witheld number, no call made to my mobile so dont know if she tried to phone or not. Still no call today so i rang my insurance again, and the lady said that i needed to make a claim on my insurance and they would try and get their insurance to pay for it but thats not guarenteed also i have an excess of 200 pound (all because of upstairs neglagence - there was no one their over christmas and no heating on!) The other annoying thing is that i was told a load of rubbish in the first call on saturday and as a result have wasted three days while waiting for the upstairs landlord to get in touch. When i tried to make a complaint i was told that because i did not have the guys name there was nothing they could do although i had the exact time and duration of the call.

Basicly i need help on what to do with the claim and also any other way of making a complaint?

Cheers jaime.

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

I dont work for RBS but another insurance company but have done for 8 years.

You can make a complaint and they should take it seriously as just because they cant trace the call does not mean that that phone call didnt exist. (however if they have a phone based system which they probably do - we have one called witness, then they can trace it with the time, date and your phone number) In a telephone based company we are to at on good faith of our customers information. Also it is probably and very likely that the person did tell you that as it is something we would tell you to try to do first. Again this would be to save you your excess.

Call back and ask to speak to a manager straight away. The manager will take your complaint on. They are regulated by the financial services authority and they define a compaint as "disatisfaction of a customer whether justified or not". A complaint needs to be logged and aknowledged by letter within 2 days with an outcome of the complaint hopefully reached within 30 days. You should also receive a form within the letter they send of the compaints procedure and when you can comtact the obudsman.

I will check back on this and if you want more info I will send you my email address for advice.

edit - oh and i would go through your own insurance company if this guy is giving you the run around upstairs. but if you can wait then ask the guy for his insurance details and contact them yourself. they may not deal with you though.. Check your policy for legal services and what that covers you for too

  • Not taking down the name of the contact should not present a problem. It is all logged in the company's computer. As k them to dig it up. Your first port of call should be CAB in the event of further lack of cooperation on the part of the insurers.

  • Try to calm down and not get too annoyed at your Insurance Company for the time being. You have a right to be irritated but at this moment in time you need the help of your own insurer, and may well get further by being agreeable. You can always put in a written complaint once the claim has been dealt with, but for now you need them on your side. Insist that they deal with the claim and make sure that you keep accurate notes of who you speak to and what you are told.

Is it legal to claim on two building insurance companies for the same thing ?

Resolved Question

Is it legal to claim on two building insurance companies for the same thing ?

We have building and contents insurance with two different providers, neither have ever been claimed on. Both are paid up to date. We need to claim for an emergency door lock repair. We've paid for both so can we claim from both ? (We are in UK, England).

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

If you claim from two different companies for the same thing then you are guilty of fraud. They all work together on claims so you can rest assured that you'll get found out, and when you do, you'll not only get your claims refused but you'll be done for even attempting it !

  • No. You should never insure the same risk with two companies because this will give them the opportunity to argue between themselves about which company should make good the loss.

The central condition of any insurance policy is that the claimant (customer) should not make a profit out of a loss. Many policies state that they will not pay out if a risk is covered by another policy or that they will only pay a proportion of the claim.

  • Gambits answer is correct.

I think you are saying that you have contents insurance with one company and building contents with another. There is nothing wrong with doing that if it saves you money (or you live in a leashold, where buidlings cover is arranged by the freeholder), though I'm surprised that it would as most firms give a discount to people who have both.

As the G man says you can claim from both, but you must tell each of them about the other. You will only receive one lot of money, they may split the payment but frankly for the sum of money we're talking about I bet one of them (probably the buildings insurer) will probably agree to pay.

On a practical note I'd avoid claiming from two co's simply because you have double the paperwork... pick one and claim just from them.

  • Being insured twice for the same risk is called dual insurance. You are only legally entitled to be paid out once for any incident and on a reasonable sized claim you will probably be asked whether there is any other cover in force. Dual insurance causes a lot of problems in the event of a major claim. And you have absolutely nothing to gain by having dual insurance - in fact it can cause many problems. You are throwing money away by insuring the same risk twice.
    0% 0 Votes
  • No, it would be fraud to claim from both policies for the same thing. You're actually over-insured, and you should sort that out before you have to make a really big claim, as you could end up stuck in an argument between the two companies as to which of them should pay out. It'll be one or the other, but not both, and each will want the other insurer to pay.
    0% 0 Votes
  • As long as you inform BOTH insurers that there are two policies in existence then each company will pay half of the claim assuming both policies cover the same things. In this case it is NOT considered fraud. Of course it begs the question why do you have two policies. Is one an excess coverage?
    0% 0 Votes
  • No, that is fraudulent. How can you claim twice for one job? One claim will be to pocket the money.
The fact that you are paying twice to insure the same property/items is your choice. Seems daft to me.

How to become a preferred supplier to insurance companies?

How to become a preferred supplier to insurance companies?

How would a company go about becoming a preferred supplier for an insurance company?

This would apply to any product but as an example I work for a Persian rug specialist, we get quite a lot of people coming in looking to replace damaged rugs but it would be good to become some sort of official supplier or valuer for the insurance firms.

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

You have to watch out for conflicts of interest to avoid being sued. Contact the Insurance Company and present your offer of services. Adjusters usually handle damages and have experience in that field.D

Other Answers (1)

  • This isn't possible. You could become a preferred provider of service, such as repairing rugs, but insurance companies don't replace items. Once they pay a claim for an item that must be replaced, it is entirely up to the individual where to purchase that item.
Same with cars. I have a friend who repairs car interiors for insurance companies. If a car is totaled, though, the insurance company cuts the insured person a check. They can then go buy any brand of car they like.
The best you can do is to advertise with insurance companies and, perhaps, offer individual insurance agents a referral fee for recommending you.

Question about company cars?

Resolved Question

Question about company cars?

when you are issued a company car do you have to pay for the insurance and tax or does the company do that?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

The company pays for that - along with maintenance costs.

Some companies pay for gas for business and personal use. Others pay for gas only for business use.

Most companies restrict who can drive the company car. Most will allow the employee and spouse only. So, if you are single...only the employee can drive the car.

Since the company is paying for insurance....there are a couple of things that will get your fired:
1. A DUI. Many will fire you if you get a DUI not driving the company car. It's a pretty safe bet you'll get fired if you get a DUI in the company car.

2. Allowing any one else to drive your company car. If the company allows you and your spouse...that's it. No one else can drive it.

My company does not get too upset about the occasional speeding ticket. Those happen when you drive a lot. But the company won't pay your ticket. You have to do that yourself.

  • The company pays for everything with a company car, including insurance, road tax, servicing, tyres etc, the only thing you will have to pay for is the extra income tax you will have to pay on your earnings as a company car is classed as a benefit, so look to pay around an extra £4000 to £6000 extra in income tax out of your salary for having a company car
  • Company has you 100% covered.
You can even just have liability only as your current insurance.
If you wreck the car - the company will pay.

Call HR to verify this - some companies may be different.

Send a recorded delivery letter to the Broker requesting the documents be issued within the next 7 days. If you do not receive a satisfactory response contact the Insurance Ombudsman with details. If you know which Insurance Company the policy is with you could try speaking direct to them as well.
The answer given is incorrect. You must follow the insurance intermediary's complaints procedure - which by law must be given to you before you buy any product from them. Only once you have done so can you proceed with the FOS. If the firm IS A BROKER contact BIBA.

Are there anything I need to take extra care?

Once I think about it, it gives me headache.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

I would suggest you to search through Google, Freeindex and other websites with a feedback system so you can see how a removal company is rated.

When talking to the removal companies try to give them as much details about your stuff as possible so they can calculate the fees more precisely.

They also quote depending on the type of service you require:

Full Service: They help you with the packing/unpacking, loading/unloading. This is the most convenient service but also most expensive.
Semi Service: You do the packing/unpacking, they help you with loading/unloading. This is the most common type of service.
Self Service: You handle packing/unpacking, loading/unloading and they only need to drive. This is the cheapest option but also require lots of efforts.

In my opinion if you have lots of valuable items you should go for the first option as professional removers normally provide very good and suitable packing materials for different types of items in your house.

Hope this helps.

Despite giving all relevant info required by insurance company, they are dragging their heels over payment and have been very unhelpful during phone calls. She has contacted the Insurance Omsbudsman and they have contacted them. A week ago the insurance company said a cheque was in the post, but refused to say for how much. To date it hasn't arrived. Meanwhile, interest continues to accrue on the credit card used to pay the fee. What next please?

  • above answers are right but call again the same company ask to speek to the claim department and ask to speak to a manager or supervisor if the person talking to you is not being helpful.

it is their duty to let you know exactly how much they are sending money and what's the status. if a check is in the mail they will tell you how much, unless you are not the policy holder they can not discuss the claim with you.

I think you need to clear out the matter with your son and girlfriend because they can get any answer they want from the insurance company being the policy holder.

    good luck

  • Send a registered letter to the insurance company head office giving all the details you have about the policy number and claim number. Set out all your costs including interest and the cost of phone calls. Say that if these costs are not reimbursed within 7 days, you will start legal proceedings without further notice and you will also request that their regulator investigates whether their policies are fraudulent.

Buildings Insurance - do I have a right to ask for a breakdown?

Resolved Question

Buildings Insurance - do I have a right to ask for a breakdown?

Hi there!!

I need some advice!

I am a leaseholder in a block of 6 flats (including mine). Last year my Buildings Insurance bill was £222.65 which covered September 2008 - September 2009.

Just before Christmas I received my Buildings Insurance bill which covers October 2009 to October 2010 and it has gone up to £349.98. Thats an increase of over £100 in just 1 year.

Considering there are 5 other flats, and I am assuming the other flats have had an increase in their buildings insurance too, that is an increase overall of approximately £600 in our Buildings Insurance.

I have received nothing with my bill explaining the reason for the large increase or proof that a cheaper quote could not be found.

After reading some forums, I understand that if one flat is bigger than another, the bigger flat should be paying a higher buildings insuance premium - is this correct? I know for certain that at least 2 of the flats are bigger than mine. I have a very small 1 bed flat.

Do I have a right to ask the Managing Agents for a breakdown of the Buildings Insurance and how it is split between all the flats? Do I also have a right to demand to know why it has gone up over a £100 and contest this?

My Managing Agents are a nightmare and always send my account off to the Property Debt Collection agency whilst I am trying to contest a charge - I have had serious issues with them since moving on over 2 years ago.

Therefore I want to make sure what my rights are before I send them an email asking for details on the Buildings Insurance.

Can anyone give me some advice?

Thank you so much!

Most people in leasehold flats form their own Management Agency to take over the administration of the buildings

They do this because the Builders own 'Management Agency' typically RIP YOU OFF for everything from (un)necessary repairs, to grass (non)cutting to insurance ..... they are EXACTLY like Local (and central) Government - unaccountable bodies who extract money (Tax) and squander it in anyway that takes their fancy ... (you know why Local Councils lost multi-millions in Icelandic banks ??? because they had extracted so much unnecessary Council Tax that they could hold millions of ££'s of their ratepayers money 'in Reserve' = a habit that a lot of Management Agencies also have ..)

Unfortunately, it's a fact of life == either you manage your own financial affairs OR you get ripped off big time .. if the other Leaseholders are not interested, you had better start looking to move (& next time avoid Leasehold like the plague it is)

Can she claim her home insurance?

Resolved Question

Can she claim her home insurance?

My friend had just left her house minutes and as by the time she got to the gates at the end of her driveway. The house blew up, they already know that there was at least 2 bombs in the house, the house is completely destroyed. I want to know would there be any reason that she cant claim her insurance . If it matters the house was valued at around €1.67m and about another €1m of contents inside the house. Is there any reason she wouldn't be able to claim

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

What? Standard home insurance does not cover acts of war or acts of terrorism. If either of these were the cause then the claim would be invalid under the terms and conditions of a standard policy. However, anyone with a property of that value may well have more than standard insurance cover.
So basically we can't give you an answer because it depends on the circumstances and what cover is in force.

  • I am not expert on insurance but if knew there was 2 bomb in house, then it is your responsibility to let know your insurance. You have not clarified about bomb. Is it house built on old bomb sit or any other way. you need to clarify bomb story. If it built on battlefield and you did not know then there is possibility, if not then unable to claim.
  • It depends on her policy. Under the most common policy, HO3, acts of war (including civil war, rebellion, or insurrection) aren't covered. But it's going to depend on her policy and what country you're in. She should really contact her insurance agent and go over her policy.

  • Do you live in the Middle East? Bombs in a house? Acts of war may not be covered.
