Insurance comparison sites?

Resolved Question

Insurance comparison sites?

I have recently been trawling through some of these websites, this question does not relate to the actual content of of insurance quotes.
I have noticed a certain number of insurance companies clearly state that quotes cannot be given due to the age of the person looking for car insurance. This appears to be identifying the older individual,i have friends who are in their sixties and very capable and safe drivers,
where does age discrimination come into all this, are the insurance companies above the law in this matter or can complaints be made on this issue

  • Insurance premiums are based on risk. Risk is determined by multiple factors, one of which includes age. State insurance departments regulate those rates and the factors that going into determining them.

There are several insurance companies that do not insure drivers who are over a certain age. Period. The companies statistics warrant that eligibility criteria and that decision had to be proven, verified and approved by the insurance commissioners involved.

Unfortunately, there are companies that are small and only have small numbers of statistics to rely on. (The majority of companies use the statistics they have personally gathered from their claims experiences.) These same companies either cannot support their claims reserves if they cannot charge high enough premiums. Often, they will choose to deny coverage rather than charge premiums that the insurance commissioners will not allow.

Try insuring yourself (or those you are working with) through a reputable company who has very large claim reserves such as State Farm, Allstate, USAA and Nationwide. Use an agent. Do it yourself insurance is not advisable.

  • There are good and bad in every age group. Older drivers are a higher risk just like new drivers. They put everyone in the same category but they still get discounts for being good drivers.

  • Age is a major factor in assessing risk for many types of insurance so companies have a genuine reason for using it to price their products.
