How long does it take to get an insurance check after a flood in my house?

Resolved Question

How long does it take to get an insurance check after a flood in my house?

how many weeks does it take to get an insurance check after a flood in my home?

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

Do you have a flood policy? No insurance company covers flood. All flood coverage is administered by FEMA. Insurance agents sell the policies on behalf of FEMA. The insurance company does not pay the claim. You're at the mercy of FEMA on this type of claim.

Now, if you are referring to water damage that may have occurred from a burst pipe or leakage from ceiling or roof damage, that will depend on the company and how quickly their adjuster got to you or when you provided the estimates and they reviewed them. All insurance companies are not equal. Each has different service times and coverage amounts that they determine need to be paid.

My boss is making me pay for damage i caused to a work van. I dont understand why i have to when its insured?

Resolved Question

My boss is making me pay for damage i caused to a work van. I dont understand why i have to when its insured?

They made me drive a van with one wing mirror and suds law i reversed into a pillar on the side i had no mirror. The damage cost £700 and my employer is making me pay for it.

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

Your employer cannot make you pay for it. An employer cannot make any deductions from an employees wage (apart from tax deductions) without their specific consent in writing so don't worry about that.

Whether or not you can be sacked for causing the damage is another question and it would be up to you if you feel that making a contribution to the cost of repairs would stop you getting sacked but there is definitely no legal requirement for you to pay for the damage.

  • In a nutshell, did you advise the employer of the broken wing mirror, before driving the van? Did you have another person with you, who could have seen you back on the blind side?

In any case, refuse to pay. An employer has to show that you were negligent and caused wilfull damage, for him to be able to get you to pay up.

If he threatens to make deductions from wages for it, that is classed as an illegal deduction from wages, and you can go through an industrial tribunal to claim thr pay back, but you have to go through the company grievance procedure first.

I would strongly recommend joining a union if you aren't already a member of one. If you are a member of a union already, advise them now of this problem you are facing for more advice.

  • Legally your boss should pay for any damage you do to the van during work hours. If you damage the van while not working(say you take the van home on weekends and drive it for personal use), then you are required to pay.
Your boss probably does not want to pay the excess on the claim and also pay the higher insurance rate in the future.
Unfortunately you do have the same problem all employees have. He has power over your job. In an economic climate that many people have lost their jobs, unfortunately you may be pushed into paying for the damage just to keep your job.
If you do pay the cost, and you leave, you can try and take him to small claims tribunal to get the money back.

But again, if you did the damage during work, it legally should be paid by work.

  • This sounds very fishy. Usually you would not have to pay anything regardless of what the damage is. If you have an employment contract, it should state what your employers policy is for when driving company vehicles. Some employers ask their employees to pay the excess when its their fault but this is not that common.

Perhaps your employer is asking you to pay as they don't actually have insurance.

Insuring comic collection?

Resolved Question

Insuring comic collection?

I have a personal comic collection of around 12000 ranging from Silver Age to present, mainly Marvel, I want to insure. Is there a way to go about this without having to individually grade each one? I am in the UK.

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

You should cover them under a "personal articles policy" (PAP). You may need an appraisal on the set.

Call and ask your agent.

  • Most insurance companies offer additional coverage on their home insurance policies to cover such items. They would of course need an inventory and a cost to replace. You could either insure them as a job lot, or the time consuming task of listing them individually. I recall reading in a copy of Wizard about 18 months ago there is a dedicated insurance policy offer by someone specifically for comics but I can't for the life of me remember.
    0% 0 Votes
  • The other answers are correct, and you would really need to make a list of each individual items. If your home insurance policy has a single items clause (most do nowadays) then you would only be paid for any affected items if you suffered a loss or damage, so if half of them were damaged in a flood you'd only get the value of the damaged ones. So it's in your own best interest to get rough estimates of the individual values if you have any that are much more valuable than the rest.

Will AA home insurance replace my Plasma TV 'New for Old'?

Resolved Question

Will AA home insurance replace my Plasma TV 'New for Old'?

My kids have just thrown a Wii remote through my 42" Samsung Plasma TV. Before paying the £150 excess i wanted to check what TV/Money they would pay out?

New Tele? will it be a Samsung? Cash?
Thanks

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

check your policy, if it says replacement cost coverage for personal property you will get a brand new TV, if it says actual cash value you will get a TV of similar age/value to the one you have now. And the insurer will want to know the reason why the damage was caused as well.

  • Check your policy details. Do you have accidental damage cover, and does it cover damage caused by children? Check the list of exclusions. If you are covered then you are entitled to "similar type and quality" which does not mean that you can get the latest version of the tv you currently have. Unless the exact same model is still available then you are not guaranteed to get a Samsung - just similar type and quality.

If you drive with insurance and m.o.t but no tax what are the penalties?

Resolved Question

If you drive with insurance and m.o.t but no tax what are the penalties?

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

Your car will be impounded and you have to pay a fine (Fine up to £1,000 or 5 times the annual road tax fee, whichever is the greater amount) and get the tax to get it back or it will be crushed.

It is an offence to drive a vehicle or allow someone to drive a vehicle on a road without road tax or without displaying a valid tax disc. If you drive a vehicle declared SORN (Statutory Off-Road Notification) or having paid the wrong tax amount you will also be guilty of an offence.

It is very possible that they will refuse your claim as you have not declared a material change to the policy. Having lodgers (I assume that they live with you) does change things as it means there are other people with access to your things.

You will have to wait and see what they say I'm afraid.

I need to get a company's public liability insurance?

Resolved Question

I need to get a company's public liability insurance?

i need to get a company's public liability insurance if they won't give it to me is there any way of getting hold of it?

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

Public liability is not a compulsory insurance in the UK and therefore finding out if a company holds the cover can be very difficult if they are not willing to volunteer the information. If the company has employees, then employers liability is a compulsory insurance and the company should display the certificate at their premises. It is normal for public liability to be combined under the same policy as the employers liability, so tracking down the employers liability certificate should reveal who the public liabilty insurers are.

  • Do you have a copy of their last years certificate with a particular insurer? The insurance company, whilst they may not breach privacy and give you details of the policy, they may be willing to tell you over the phone (or steer you to a website where you may download a certificate of currency if you put in the policy or reference number) that the policy is current.
Seek the relevant government authority for your options for this

Will being self employed affect my future?

Resolved Question

Will being self employed affect my future?

I am a part time student and cant get a job that fits around my timetable, but want the extra cash (and to keep myself busy)
so my friend recommended me becoming a text chat operator, which im fine with.
iv sent off for the pack etc. and iv been accepted and have to send certain documents (inc. a copy of my driving licence)
i also have to declare myself as self employed and do my own taxes, again im fine with that
but i was wondering if in future when i get a proper job will my new employees be able to see what work i did when self employed?
as i feel that if people in the field i want to go into knew i did text chat lines i wouldnt get a top job, or would be prejudged.

also, another point id like to make is how likely is it that the company will keep personal information private (for example the fact i actually worked for them?)

thankyou

There is no way a future employer could find out about your self-employment, unless you tell them. HMRC certainly won't. If you start a new job, there will no form P45, so you should ask new employer for, and you should sign, form P46. There is no mention of self-employment on that form, so you could get personal tax-free allowance at job, and pay tax on all your self-employed earnings
There is no guarantee about what the company will disclose, or who to. There would however be no connection to any new employer unless you asked for a reference from company, and I wouldn't suggest you did that. You should be very wary about what documentation you send this company in these days of identity theft, so be very careful. If you are doing text chats, why on earth would they need your driving licence? In that line of business, it is not likely they would need to check to see if you are an illegal immigrant.

  • Your new employees will not be able to find out unless you tell them.

They may actually look on the fact you became self-employed as a good thing as it shows enterprise and an eagerness to work.

Also if you don't tell them, you will not be able to provide a working reference or perhaps show that you have previous work experience.

The company you are working for should not divulge your information due to the Data Protection Act unless they have stated in the paperwork somewhere that they will will do this. Check your paperwork thoroughly.

It does sound like you need a specialist insurer because of the type of property you live in. I think that you better off going to a broker as they are more likely to get you the right cover. Depending on the sum insured some insurers may even carry out an appraisal of the property which will ensure that you are not under-insured.

Contents Insurance!!!?

I am going to be going to university in a week however the university has only been able to provide me with temporary accomodation for 2-3 weeks in a hotel, after that they are going to give me permanenet accomodation.
I was just wondering is it possible for me to take out contents insurance for just the 3 weeks I am in the hotel, because the university goes that we have to sort it out ourselves.

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

You take out the policy in your name with one of the specialist companies that insure university students.
The policy is taken out from your home address and is for the address you will be living at.
Quickest and easiest method will be to do it on line but you will need to ring them and explain and they will make up the policy for two addresses. You realistically still need the contents insurance for the uni digs anyway.

My daughter has just finished uni and we had insurance each year for each address to cover all personal possessions.

  • I would call around to the local insurance companies and ask if they have a rider or a policy that you can purchase for the hotel stay. Your home owners policy may extend to the hotel temporarily, if you have home owners insurance. Otherwise renters insurance covers possessions. You may be able to get renters insurance for the dorm at the university or for sure you can get it for off campus housing.

  • Insurance premiums are based on risk. Risk is determined by multiple factors, one of which includes age. State insurance departments regulate those rates and the factors that going into determining them.

There are several insurance companies that do not insure drivers who are over a certain age. Period. The companies statistics warrant that eligibility criteria and that decision had to be proven, verified and approved by the insurance commissioners involved.

Unfortunately, there are companies that are small and only have small numbers of statistics to rely on. (The majority of companies use the statistics they have personally gathered from their claims experiences.) These same companies either cannot support their claims reserves if they cannot charge high enough premiums. Often, they will choose to deny coverage rather than charge premiums that the insurance commissioners will not allow.

Try insuring yourself (or those you are working with) through a reputable company who has very large claim reserves such as State Farm, Allstate, USAA and Nationwide. Use an agent. Do it yourself insurance is not advisable.

Underpinning and Insurance?

We are currently trying to purchase a house that had underpinning 10 years ago. The survey confirms it has been done well and that there is no further movement. We are struggling to get insurance at the mo. Is it a legal requirement that the current insurer has to continue the insurance with the new owner or merely an unwritten rule?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

No the insurance stops when the owner changes. It is not mandatory for the insurance company to continue with the coverage. However, if the home has been a good risk than normally the insurance company will not deny coverage against the new owner, provided the insurance company is satisfied with the other Aspects like claims history of the new owner is good

The duty of care you refer to is for the individual not property. You are rightly angry of course but unfortunately the school, staff or insurers can't be held responsible. Your best bet is to try to get the school to improve it's security for pupil's possessions. The changing rooms should have lockers and pupils should be issued a key before P.E.. and return it afterwards. Perhaps a word with the PTA would be a way forward.

  • I can't possibly see how the school can be made responsible for pupils leaving their personal possessions left unattended.

Let's face it, it's common knowledge that kids know stuff goes walkabout especially things like phones.

Just because there are no notices it doesn't mean that they haven't been told personally by a member of staff. Also the school is under no obligation to provide anything regarding personal property.

You would have been given a crime number by the Police so claim on the phones insurance or your house insurance as I can't see the school paying up.
  • No, she brought it to school at her own risk.
  • The school is not responsible for keeping every pupils belongings safe, that is down to the pupil. Most schools actually have policies against mobile phones brought to school, i know when i was at school (was only 6 years ago) that we were all told that mobile phones were our responsibility and we were responsible for there care and safety. If we brought them to school it was at our own risk and we learnt to keep them locked away in our lockers. Does the school provide lockers? If so then they are therefore already providing somewhere safe to keep belongings, it was your daughters choice to leave the phone unattended. I know very few schools that now don't provide lockers to all pupils. Money, keys etc should be locked away in a locker unless required at the time. Why would schools provide signs that say left at own risk? common sense tells you if you leave something worth money unattended its at risk of being stolen.

Car Insurance Claim & New Cover?

My wife's car was stolen and ended up a write off. She lost her no claims discount, as the policy owner. I was a named driver on the policy. We are now getting a new car. If i get the insurance policy out in my name, with my wife as the named driver, do i need to declare the claim? I want to minimise cost, but want to be legal.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

If you wife is a named driver on your policy you do have a duty to disclose her previous claims history. My advice would be to disclose this as in the event your wife make a claim in the future the insurers will be able to find this information out from CUE. Claims & Underwriting exchange.

Other Answers (3)

  • You will have to give the correct information since if at any time the insurance company finds out about this than it will be considered as a misrepresentation and your policy can be cancelled.
Secondly, theft will not affect your driving record nor that of your wife since the claim was not because of your negligence.
The best solution would be to shop around online for cheap auto insurance quotes. You will get 5-6 quotes at one time and you can compare the coverages and the benefits. Besides insurance companies offer discount to clients online since they save on their operating cost.

    Source(s):

  • Yes, per the policy language your wife is also considered a named insured so any losses either one of you incurred would need to be declared.
  • They ask if any named driver's has made a claim.
