How To Become a Vetinary Assistant?

I have a friend who loves animals, is caring and very hard working. Unfortunately this person is stuck in a poor job and lacks the confidence to break out of it on her own. Ideally she would like to be a Vetinary Assistant and I would like to help her. She would be starting from scratch with few qualifications, is in her thirties and resides in Hertfordshire.
Can anyone advise the route through study or work experience that could be taken? Many thanks.

I'd recommend your 'friend' approaches her local vet and see if there might be an opening there? She could at least get some information about how best to go about getting into this field.
